Pain of change or pain of staying the same? Are you in enough pain to change?"
I ask that question in a lot of my trainings because it gets to the heart of recovery.
Change is painful. Staying the same is painful. The question is: which pain serves you better?
, here's
what I've learned about hope and pain...
Hope isn't about avoiding pain. It's about believing that the pain of change is worth it because something better is possible.
When someone comes to us in crisis, they're usually in the pain of staying the same. They've tried everything they know how to try, and nothing is working.
That's when hope becomes most
accessible.
Not because we convince them everything is fine. But because we show them that change is possible. That the pain they're experiencing now doesn't have to be permanent.
But here's the thing about offering hope professionally...
You need to know how to stay grounded in listening to someone else's pain without absorbing it. You need skills to help
them process trauma without being re-traumatized yourself. You need boundaries that protect both of you.
Our DBT Skills and Trauma-Informed Peer Support courses teach exactly these competencies. You can get these courses along with the ENTIRE on-demand catalogue (40 HOURS!) for under $100. Each class has a quiz and certificate.
